Jessica Saia: “In my heart I was a beauty therapist, but sales work helped me achieve my goals”
What inspired you to start in sales, and what were your first steps on this path?
I started in sales a bit over 3 years ago, inspired by an Upsell job advertisement that promised high personal development, a great salary, and a supportive team. At that moment, I was rather shy and had never done paid work before. I needed money and wanted to become a better communicator and to understand myself and others better.
I discovered the ad thanks to my sister (thanks, sis!), who in my opinion was spending too much time scrolling through social media. I asked her to do something more sensible and send me different job advertisements. 😀
Before I applied to Upsell, I went to a job interview at a clothing store where I wanted to work. There was a group interview, and after the trial day, one girl spoke about that job as if it were the best in the world, and at that moment I felt that it was not for me. After the group interview, they said they would contact suitable candidates. I walked out of the office and thought that there must be a much better job out there for me somewhere! And indeed, I was right!
A few days later, I went to a job interview at Upsell, and after the interview, I was completely convinced that this was exactly the place where I wanted to work and develop. I studied the text like crazy and begged all the universes to accept me.
Right after the interview, I called my sister and excitedly talked about the work, the people, the opportunities, and promised her that I would give her a part of my first salary. And guess what? I did get the opportunity, and from my first decent salary, I transferred 300 euros to my sister as a token of gratitude. I will be grateful to my sister for the rest of my life for bringing my path and Upsell together!
Tell us more, what did you do before and why did you decide in favor of sales?
Just before joining Upsell, I had graduated from an international makeup school and a vocational school majoring in styling. After finishing makeup school, Covid was gaining momentum, and there was a shortage of makeup clients.
In the beginning, I did both sales and makeup at the same time. I did both jobs with half-focus. I wasn't earning well either at Upsell or at the salon. After working like this for a couple of months, Anton (our CEO) wrote to me saying that I had to decide which job to choose. Doing two things at once made me not good at either. I chose sales, put all my focus on Upsell, and the next month my salary was 300% higher! One of the best decisions of my life! I chose sales because I saw that it developed me as a person and, of course, also my wallet. I saw an opportunity for how it would totally change my life. And it did.

What would your life look like right now if you were still working in the beauty industry?
Oh, I would probably earn a maximum of €1000 a month, share an apartment with a strange roommate, and be a struggling, average, grumpy young person who blamed everyone else but themselves for their troubles. I don't even want to think about it for longer, too ugly a picture. 😀
How to realize dreams and goals? Do they have to be written down and deadlines set?
First of all, there must be a burning desire, wish, need, and thirst. You must want it from the bottom of your heart. When you want something that much, you are ready to give your all, even if it initially seems impossible. Making a decision is an important step. You must carefully think through when, why, how much, and how you will achieve your goal or dream. Visualize them in your head and analyze how things have gone so far, what could have been done better, and what went well. Push yourself! You get what you deserve!

What was your biggest challenge when starting in sales and how did you cope with it?
My home environment at the time was full of challenges. The people I lived with repeated daily that this job was a complete waste of time, that I would never manage to earn anything, and that I was being brainwashed. I was advised to leave the job and find a
